Nigerian youths shine in

South Africa
Nigeria (represented by Search and Groom –youth for development centre) fought from behind to secure maximum points on the opening day of proceedings at the “Football for Hope” Festival 2010.
Playing against Grassrootsoccer (Zimbabwe, Zambia & South South Africa) in Group A, the team lost possession deep in the half of their opponent and a counter attack resulted in the lone goal for the team from Southern Africa.
Trailing one-nil and with less than three minutes to play, substitute Emmanuel Egege came from the bench to level score after a solo run beating four players on the way.
The capacity crowd at the specially constructed street soccer stadium with artificial turf went wild with excitement after Kehinde Akinwande hit the roof of the net with a minute to spare to end score at 2 – 1.
Goalkeeper Ebenezer Aderemi had started the build up from the rear and Egege Emmanuel shrugged off two opponents, with only the goalkeeper to beat, he chose to pass on the ball to Kehinde Akinwande and she hit a rising shot for a spectacular goal.

With this result, Nigeria made three points from the game and another one point for fairplay on the pitch.

Earlier in the day, FIFA President Sepp Blatter alongside South African President Jacob Zuma was at Alexandria to declare the Festival open. Suliat Yusuf, captain of the Nigerian team was amongst the selected 32 youths that helped out in adding colour to the opening ceremony.
The FIFA President stressed the educational function of the event, saying: "Football is based on discipline and respect, a game played in good spirit. Being a school of life, football is also an education which is not only seen in school but throughout life. That is why the Football for Hope Festival can bring together all of football's qualities and ethics to disseminate hope through the game and to promote the health of our youth."

President Zuma said the young people taking part would gain precious lessons from the week ahead. "Football is more than just football, it is something beyond. The Football for Hope Festival provides the participants with a chance to experience and learn – to learn to be a happy winner and to accept defeat graciously. I wish I were a young man who could compete in this wonderful competition." The two presidents then jointly declared the festival open.

Heartbroken after their quarter-final exit from the World Cup, Ghana’s players did not only find solace by the enormous support from the rest of the continent but were fulfilled by the high-profile visits Saturday to the homes of former South African president Nelson Mandela and his ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Mandela's foundation on Saturday praised the Black Stars for their performance in the tournament.

"They represented the continent well and although they did not qualify for the semi-finals they can return home with their heads held high," it said in a statement.

The Black Stars enjoyed special moments with the two icons at their separate homes in South Africa, a day after losing to Uruguay in the last eight.

The climax of the days visit was the arrival at the Johannesburg neighborhood residence of Nelson Mandela where replica Ghana shirts and other items were presented to the revered leader.

Sitted in the hall of his beautiful home, players and officials went in batches to shake hands with the 91 year-old Madiba and had the rare opportunity of group photo sessions with the former president.

“It’s a dream come true,” said midfielder Derek Boateng after the team met Mandela.

“He is a legend, you know, and everybody is talking about him,” Boateng said. “It is the first time we have met him.”

Earlier, Ghana’s team visited the Sowetan home of Madikizela-Mandela where the former wife of Madiba praised and encouraged the players for their wonderful performance.

“I am proud of you,” said Madikizela-Mandela as the entire Ghana delegation gathered at her residence.

“Your performance has really lifted our hearts and given us hope. We can always look to a better future.”

“Before the World Cup, I lost a great-grand daughter, Zenani Mandela, 13, in a car crash on her way home from a World Cup kick-off concert.

"I was a very sad moment but my sorrows have been replaced with joy due to your performance.”

Sowetans showed that Ghana’s popularity was still intact as they greeted the players with applause.

“It was a big privilege for me and the players,” said Ghana’s goalkeeper, Richard Kingson, after that meeting. “She advised (us about) our life and our future, and how to be a good guy and how to control things.”
